Revitalising Sweden's winter festival of light

Heart and Soul

Available for over a year

Every year on the 13th of December churches and schools in Sweden choose one girl to play Saint Lucia, a third century Sicilian. It’s one of the most important nights in the country. Jo Fidgen looks at the Middle Eastern migrants who have embraced Saint Lucia and reversed the trend in Sweden to shun Christianity. Twenty-five year-old Swedish-Assyrian Isabelle Gursac talks about her experiences of celebrating Saint Lucia in school. (Photo: Isabelle Gursac and her father.)
