The disputed monkey "selfie"

Newsday

Available for over a year

One legal battle has been sorted in an American court, in the case between a British nature photographer, an Indonesian crested Macaque monkey and a selfie that went viral online. The question facing the judge : who owns the copyright of a picture taken by the monkey but using the photographer's camera ? The case was brought by the campaign group PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. It argued that all proceeds from the picture should benefit the monkey. A court in San Francisco disagreed, ruling that copyright protection cannot applied to animals. Where does that leave the photographer involved, David Slater? Here's his reaction.
