The wartime messages they left at a tea stall

Newsday

Available for over a year

The city of Peterborough, in England, is publishing messages today written by soldiers who caught trains to and from the front during World War One. The messages were left at a tea stall in the city's station. They can now be read online after being carefully researched by Richard Hunt, the archivist for Peterborough. He told Newsday about the soldiers leaving poignant or funny notes: ( Photo: Fredrick Gordon Brettle --a British-born Australian Army Private-- survived the war, married and had a long career working as a fitter/turner in Australia until his retirement in 1959.
