Another Blow For Snibston Lovers

Jim Davis and Jo Hayward

Available for over a year

Campaigners fighting to save Snibston Discovery museum have been dealt another blow, with the news that a smaller mining museum won't be built as planned. Last summer the doors finally closed on the family attraction in Coalville, with the county council saying it could no longer afford the hundred of thousands of pounds in subsidies. Instead, they said they would create a smaller museum to recognise the town's mining heritage - but following a budget meeting this week, that too has now been axed. It was hoped last summer that a mining museum could soon be built here, but now councillors have admitted there isn't the funding available - as they try and find a further 78 million pounds in savings. Meanwhile question marks still remain over the huge number of exhibits that were housed here, and what it will all mean for the town itself. Jo Hollis has been speaking to people about the museum - including Louise Hall, who worked as a volunteer on site.
