Clara, County Offaly: The Goodbody Jute Factory

World War One At Home

Available for over a year

The small village of Clara in County Offaly is where the Goodbody family – who were members of the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers - once ran a number of businesses, from flour mills to jute production. During the war, almost everything that had to be wrapped, bagged or packaged was done so in jute – from coal and sandbags to ham and grain! Reggie Goodbody recounts his family’s story and how they squared their pacifist principles with war. Location: Clara, County Offaly. 53°20'35.1"N 7°36'48.5"W Image: The reinforced concrete chimney of the former Goodbody Jute factory
