A study suggests that high-frequency sounds generated by door sensors, public address systems and machinery could give some people seasickness-like symptoms. People with symptoms such as headaches, dizziness and migraine are being sent away unheeded by doctors, scientists and manufacturers, said Timothy Leighton, professor of Ultrasonics and Underwater Acoustics at the University of Southampton, and author of the study. "I don’t like the assumption that if you can’t hear it, it can’t harm you because we don’t have a mechanism to say that", Professor Leighton said.
