Africa's North Korean monuments

Newsday

Available for over a year

North Korea is a country known for its secrecy but not when it comes to art. It is the one area that has seen the Hermit Kingdom opening up to the outside world. In recent years North Korea’s government-run Mansudae Overseas Projects has created several massive works of nationalist art at the request of African governments. But while controversial in their host countries, the towering Soviet-like statues have provided North Korea with much needed foreign income. Lawrence Pollard reports.
