The aurochs, ancestor of modern cattle, became extinct in the 17th century, but David MacHugh, who has managed to obtain a DNA sequence of one, reckons that a combination of selective breeding of older varieties of cattle, and modern gene editing techniques, might one day allow us to see the mighty beasts grazing parts of Europe.
