Japan's oldest elephant and her concrete home

Newsday

Available for over a year

Hanako, Japan's oldest elephant, is the star attraction at Tokyo's Inokashira Park Zoo. She has spent most of her 69 years alone in a concrete enclosure. But now Hanako is at the centre of a campaign demanding that she be given a better home to live out her final days. In response the zoo has enlisted the help of elephant expert Carol Buckley. She spoke to Â鶹Éç Newsday's Nkem Ifejika. (Photo: Children look at Hanako the elephant in Inokashira Park Zoo, Japan. Credit: AP Photo/Eugene Hoshiko)
