Serena attacks 'deeply offensive' comments

Newsday

Available for over a year

The women's number one tennis player, Serena Williams, has attacked as deeply offensive comments by a tournament organiser that women players were riding on the coat tails of the men's game. Raymond Moore told journalists before Finals Day at Indian Wells that women should be down on their knees thanking God for men such as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, because they had, in his words, carried the sport. Williams said his words were an insult to women, who had no need to drop to their knees for anyone. Mr Moore, who also commented on the physical attractiveness of some female tennis stars, has apologised for his remarks. Meanwhile, male world number one, Novak Djokovic, suggested the men's tour should receive more money as it draws more fans. He said women 'fought for what they deserve and they got it' but that the men's ATP tennis world 'should fight for more'. 'Stats are showing that we have much more spectators on the men's tennis matches. I think that is one of the... reasons why maybe we should get awarded more.'
