Troops recapture Palmyra from Islamic State

Newsday

Available for over a year

The Syrian authorities say Palmyra's ancient Roman temples and archway, blown up by so-called Islamic State fighters last year, will be restored. Government forces retook the town on Sunday. Dr Amr al-Azm was the Director of Conservation at Syria's Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums. He now lives in exile in the United States. Newsday's Vishala Sri-Pathma asked him for his reaction to this news. (Photo: The remains of the Arc de Triomph (Triumph Arc) monument in Palmyra Credit: MAHER AL MOUNES/AFP/Getty Images)
