The International Office for Migration estimates that 100,000 people travelled through the Sahara desert last year. It is a perilous journey which can take up to six days in extreme temperatures. The route is taken by migrants aiming to get to North Africa and then to Europe by crossing the Mediterranean. Our West Africa correspondent Thomas Fessy has just been to Agadez in Niger, where many start the desert trek, and spoke to Newsday's Alan Kasujja.
