"My goal is to be the first hijab-wearing ballerina"

Newsday

Available for over a year

A teenage schoolgirl in Australia, Stephanie Kurlow, is determined to become the first-ever hijab-wearing ballerina. She had been dancing since she was a toddler, but stopped when her family converted to Islam in 2010 and she struggled to find a school where she could both dance and practice her religion. But now the fourteen-year-old has been awarded a scholarship to achieve her dream by sports fashion brand Bjorn Borg - named after the former number one Swedish tennis player. Stephanie has been speaking to Anu Anand. (Photo: Stephanie Kurlow dancing. Credit: Stephanie Kurlow)
