How Tanzanians are dealing with the A-word

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

People with autism are often stigmatized in many communities. In Tanzania, some families have hidden their children indoors for years, embarrassed at what others might think of their children's behaviour - seen by some as strange or abnormal. But efforts are now being made to explain the condition to encourage people to better understand and give appropriate support to those who have it. The Â鶹Éç's Sammy Awami caught up with the mother of a 16-year-old who shared her experience of raising a son with autism.
