'I thought heart attack was indigestion'

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

A cardiac arrest survivor has described the warning signs she ignored before suffering a cardiac arrest at home and said she is "extremely lucky to be here." Melanie Mully was aged 38 and out shopping with daughter Alice, who was 11-months-old at the time, when she felt faint and had pains similar to indigestion, along with aching arms when pushing her daughter in her buggy. She assumed her symptoms were due to the tiredness many parents with young children experience, but later that day she suffered a cardiac arrest at home. Melanie was shocked six times by paramedics with a defibrillator before being placed in an induced coma and spending three weeks in hospital. Her wedding, which was set to take place five days later, was delayed and she also missed her daughter's first birthday. The British Heart Foundation has released new research suggesting half of people suffering a heart attack delay seeking medical treatment, and more than 80% do not recognise the symptoms. The charity is calling for more research to improve treatment and diagnosis. This clip is originally from Afternoon Edition Tuesday 12 April 2016.
