Brain chip enables quadraplegic man to play Guitar Hero

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

An Ohio man who was paralysed from the neck down after an accident is now able to play video game Guitar Hero - thanks to a pioneering brain implant. Ian Burkhart, 24, broke his neck five years ago diving into the sea on holiday. He went from "being a very independent 19-year-old... to having to rely on other people for everything". "I really didn't have much movement, to brush my teeth, change my clothes and comb my hair," Ian said. He told 5 live's Emma Barnett that after volunteering for the trial of the brain chip, he was able to "do individual finger movements", from lifting a coffee cup to playing video games. This clip is originally from 5 live Hit List on Sunday 17 April 2016
