The Bell Foundry

Jonathan Lampon

Available for over a year

John Taylor & Co makes bells. If you live in Loughborough you'll know all too well the site the historic foundry sits on. But across the whole of Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland - the name Taylor rings out with many of the church and Cathedral bells being forged by John Taylor. From 1784 the business was operated by members of the Taylor family, and in 1839 it moved to its present position in Loughborough, and is now proud to operate the largest bellfoundry in the world. But it was only in 2009 that the foundry hit a bum note and was forced into administration. Today it's bigger and better than ever. It's about to get more than £600,000 spent on it by English Heritage to repair the roof and gutters. And its owners have plans for a £5 million restoration in the next 5 years. Jonathan Lampon went for a visit, starting off in the foundry, where he met David Potter one of the Directors of John Taylor and company.
