Gerald Hamilton was left sad and disappointed when none of his schoolmates turned up for his ninth birthday party. But after his grandmother Amelia Lara posted a note on Facebook asking for people to send birthday cards to Gerald to make up for his disappointment, the boy was inundated with cards and gifts from around the world. Lara told 5 live: Gerald, who was born with a skull condition that has required surgery & left him with learning difficulties, was thrilled by the response of strangers: "He's now the happiest I've seen him". Mrs Lara says Gerald, from the US state of Indiana, has received gifts including televisions, DVD players, bikes, and tablets - some of which he has passed onto pupils in a local special needs class - and has also been invited to meet sports stars.
