Should YouTube pay artists more money?

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Motley Crue co-founder Nikki Sixx is leading a campaign to get YouTube to pay artists more for their music. YouTube currently has around 1 billion users, and Sixx has urged owners Google to remember its former slogan - "Don't be evil" - in its dealings with artists. Sixx鈥檚 comments come as the video streaming site's contracts with the world's three biggest record labels come up for negotiation this summer. Thea O鈥橦ear of Youtube said 鈥渢he key is we are an ad-funded video platform, so it is not necessarily a fair comparison to compare us to likes of Spotify, which is an audio only subscription service.鈥 鈥淲hat we are extremely clear on is that we pay the majority of revenues generated to the creator themselves, so actually, we contribute more than any other platform to creators big and small. Advertising revenue comparisons are not necessarily comparable.鈥 This clip is originally from 5 live Drive on Friday 29 April 2016.
