Euthanasia where there is mental illness

Newsday

Available for over a year

A young Dutch woman - the victim of a decade of sexual abuse - was allowed by doctors to choose euthanasia last year by lethal injection. Details of the case have only come to light now. Doctors are said to have treated the young woman for some time and despite improvements in her psychological state - and being deemed 'mentally competent' - they concluded her condition could not be cured and agreed to assist with her desire to end her life. Newsday's Julian Keane spoke to Rob Joniquere, who heads up The World Federation of Right to Die Societies in the Netherlands. (Pic: Depressed woman; Credit: PA)
