No sovereignty law plan in Queen's Speech.

World at One

Available for over a year

Plans for a Sovereignty Bill to re-assert the supremacy of the UK Parliament have been left out of the Queen's Speech. The Queen said: 鈥淢y ministers will uphold the sovereignty of Parliament and the primacy of the House of Commons." But there was no specific promise of legislation. The government says it is still considering the recommendations of a report carried out by former Lords Leader Lord Strathclyde. The failure to include the much-vaunted new legislation has been attacked by Leave campaigners, including former Cabinet minister Iain Duncan Smith. World At One reporter Becky Milligan explained earlier this year how ministers had repeatedly promised the new law - and how their plans were running into trouble.
