Luxury perfumes and furniture could endanger some species

World Business Report

Available for over a year

If you spend your hard earned cash on a luxury perfume or an upscale piece of furniture you might expect that you are supporting legitimate industries. But that's not always the case according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. It says illegally sourced plant extracts and wood from endangered trees are being sold into the global production chain by gangs trying to make a fast buck. Ted Leggett is the author of the Wildlife Crime Report. He says poaching and the illegal trade of species presents real environmental dangers. Susannah Streeter asked him why consumers should be wary when they go to the shops to buy furniture or perfume. (Picture: An endangered longclaw orchid. Picture credit: Getty Images.)
