Yorkshire County Cricket Club's coach Jason Gillespie has spoken out against the dairy industry and the use of leather cricket balls despite the club's main sponsor being cheese firm Wensleydale Creamery. Gillespie, who has been a vegan for around three years, told the Yorkshire Post he hopes the dairy industry will "one day be shut down" but admitted that "it's out of his control". His conversion to veganism followed the death of his father from a sudden heart attack. Former Australian fast bowler Merv Hughes says cricket balls made of leather are not only traditional among cricket lovers but an alternative could give batsmen an unfair advantage. He told 5 live's Phil Williams "If you've got a synthetic ball you'd imagine it'd just be flat so there'd be no movement for the bowlers" and that would "makes it very easy for the batsman" to play the ball.
