What is Buckingham Palace's 'Marmite jar strategy?'

The World This Weekend

Available for over a year

A former royal correspondent for the Guardian has revealed that one of the secrets to the success of the British monarchy is 'the Marmite jar strategy', a term coined by Buckingham Palace officials. Stephen Bates told Mark Mardell that it was the method of changing the image of an institution, without it actually seeming to alter. "The Queen has changed her role significantly during the course of her reign", he said. "But essentially the institution still sails on as before."
