'If you have a statue for Florence Nightingale, you should have one for Mary Seacole'

The World Tonight

Available for over a year

A statue celebrating the life of Mary Seacole, a Jamaican-born nurse who cared for wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War, is to be unveiled in London. There has been a certain amount of controversy around the memorial with some arguing that Mary Seacole does not deserve to be honoured in the same manner as her contemporary Florence Nightingale. Historian Dr Ron Ramdin and Professor Elizabeth Anionwu, from Statue Appeal spoke to our reporter Elaine Dunkley. (Photo: Cartoon of Mary Jane Seacole, Jamaican nurse Credit: Getty Images)
