The UK’s first double hand transplant operation has taken place at Leeds General Infirmary, led by Professor Simon Kay. Chris King from Doncaster lost both his hands, apart from the thumbs, in an accident involving a metal pressing machine at work three years ago. Simon, the chief surgeon, told 5 Live Breakfast he felt “quite emotional after seeing how happy Chris was with his new hands. “He’s a remarkable man! “The team of which I’m apart of has completely changed his life. It feels very good indeed. He also described how he and his team carried out the twelve hour operation, as well as the challenges faced when finding donors. This clip was originally from 5 live Breakfast on Friday 22 July 2016.
