Baroness Altmann: Triple-lock pension a ‘political gimmick’

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

The outgoing Pensions Minister Baroness Altmann believes triple-lock pension protection should be dropped to save billions of pounds for other causes. Speaking to 5 live Breakfast, she said: “It is absolutely essential to protect the interest of pensioners, but a double-lock would be fairer to society, and make the pension system more sustainable. Under the triple-lock guarantee, the state pension will rise every year by either the rate of inflation, average earnings, or 2 point 5 per cent - whichever is the higher figure. Baroness Altmann feels it is unnecessary: “Instead of having a 2.5%, pensioners would get the higher of the rise in earnings or rise in inflation. You would be protecting them without this political gimmick going forward. This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on Sunday 31 July 2016.
