Presidential ambitions: Angola's Abel Chivukuvuku

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Angola's long-serving president President Dos Santos is to step down after upcoming elections in 2017, having held the post since 1979. Whilst there is speculation about who might succeed him within his governing MPLA party, opposition parties are positioning themselves to put up a tough fight in the polls. In the last elections in 2012, the MPLA took 71 per cent of the votes. They were followed by the main opposition UNITA party with 18 per cent, and in third place was a newly formed coalition known as the Convergencia Ampla de Salvacao de Angola (CASA-CE). Their leader, Abel Chivukuvuku, was once a senior member of UNITA when it was still a rebel movement. He spoke to Focus on Africa's Hassan Arouni about his chances at next year’s elections.
