Episode details

Available for over a year
'German wasps' are currently at their angriest and more likely to sting you for no reason at this time of year. Professor Adam Hart is from the University of Gloucestershire and a fellow at the Royal Entomological Society, or as he describes himself - a 'bug botherer’. He said: “One idea is that they are unemployed - their colony has come to an end, and they are not really doing anything anymore. Vespula germanica is a common species of wasp found in the British Isles - they are bigger than normal wasps but smaller than hornets. “I think we’ve got a combination of wasp behaviour linked with human behaviour. They are flying around in high numbers, and we are grabbing on to every chance to be outside, and you have a perfect storm coming together, added Professor Hart. This clip is originally from 5 live Drive on Wednesday 31st August 2016.
