A matter of life or death for Italian democracy

World at One

Available for over a year

Italy's prime minister has called a referendum later this year to cut the powers of the Italian Senate as part of a series of planned constitutional reforms. Matteo Renzi wants the voters' approval for a constitutional reform, and promises to resign if he does not get the vote. Mario Monti, the former Italian prime minister and European commissioner, told Mark Mardell he was against making it a matter of life or death for Italian democracy. (Photo: Mario Monti.
