First misogynistic hate crime figures revealed

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

5 Live has been given exclusive access to the first recorded figures by a UK police force of misogynistic hate crime. Melanie Jeffs, manager of Nottingham Women's Centre, helped to launch the campaign to record misogyny as a hate crime. She said: 鈥淲hen we started this work back last year women just genuinely had no idea they could ring the police and make a report. We can do more to raise awareness and give them the confidence to come forward.鈥 Only 21 incidents have been reported to Nottinghamshire Police since they started recording it in April, even though official figures show sex offences and domestic violence are at record levels. 鈥淭his sends a clear message that this kind of behaviour and these attitudes are not going to be tolerated in Nottinghamshire, regardless of the figures at this stage, I think the police stance is really bold鈥 Melanie added. This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast from Tuesday 6 September 2016.
