The Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell says he and Jeremy Corbyn are willing to listen to ideas from former shadow cabinet members about how they can improve the way they operate. John McDonnell said he'd had behind the scenes conversations with MPs over the Summer which were "extremely amicable" and "civilised". Asked by John Pienaar whether that meant senior shadow cabinet members who walked out, might be willing to come back and serve under Jeremy Corbyn if he wins the leadership election, Mr McDonnell said, "we're talking to people all the time. I don't want to name names and..... embarrass people, but on all sides now what we've tried to say is look, the interests of the party are above the interests of any individuals or individual campaigns." John McDonnell told the programme that amongst criticisms raised by Labour MPs had been issues of "competence and leadership". He said he and Jeremy Corbyn were now "willing to learn". Mr McDonnell said, "I've got to improve my act as well. I recognise that and I want to look at what criticisms have been made about the way I operate and Jeremy is in exactly the same mental position. How do we improve all the time?"
