US police officer "fired for not shooting a man"

Newsday

Available for over a year

Stephen Mader says he was fired from a West Virginia police department because he "failed to eliminate a threat". He was confronted by an armed man when responding to a domestic call, but decided to assess the situation further before shooting. He believed that Ronald Williams Jnr. was trying to entice the police into shooting - what is often know as a "suicide-by-cop". The Weirton Police Department have highlighted that his termination letter detailed two other complaints which contributed to his dismissal, both of which Mr Mader disputes. Sean Hamill is the journalist who broke the story for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. (Photo: A police officer watches over a crime scene in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Credit: Ross Mantle/Getty Images)
