A new sport is set to appear on our screens this week – professional drone racing. This comes after a deal was struck between Sky and the Drone Racing League to show ten one-hour episodes. Competitors in the Drone Racing League pilot custom-made crafts through courses using headsets which give a first-person view. Thomas Greer, chairman of the British First-Person View Racing Association (BFPVRA) told 5 live Drive’s Tony Livesey why drone racing is so enjoyable: “It’s an out of body experience – it’s something that you can easily get into and it’s cheap to get into as well.” He also outlined the way it would work on television and how the coverage will only get better over time: “The biggest thing we’ve found is that the downlinks we get are low resolution, so not really good for broadcasting – there are new technologies on the market that we will look to invest in and will hopefully improve things as a spectator sport.” Sky is to show drone racing as part of a $1m deal, with the World Drone Championships taking place in October this year.
