Caller to Matt Dawson: ‘Your meningitis advice saved my son’s life’
5 Live In ShortAvailable for over a year
Former England rugby union captain Matt Dawson is launching a new campaign to raise awareness of the signs of meningitis - months after his two year old son, Sami (pictured), contracted the disease. He was on a life-support machine for two weeks after becoming ill in February. Matt was speaking to 5 live Breakfast when Rich from Leicester sent a text to the programme. He wanted to thank the former rugby star for making him aware of the dangers of menengitus. We gave him a call back so he could tell his story: “My son took ill when he was six days old, just after you were first highlighted this. I remember you saying to your wife you may have put your son down to sleep it off, but because of what you said we took him in and it saved his life.” The initiative ‘Tackle Menengitis’, is also backed by UK charities Meningitis Research Foundation and Meningitis Now. Matt said: “I could have said the same thing to the family who influenced us – you coming on here will do the same for another family.” This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on Friday 16 September 2016.
