Martin Lewis: Parents shouldn’t pay children’s uni tuition fees

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Money expert Martin Lewis has advised parents of students starting university this autumn not to pay the tuition fees upfront, because when they have a job, he says they may not earn over the threshold in order to pay it back. Martin, talking to Adrian Chiles on 鶹 Radio 5 live, said that “unless they’re really high earners, then you’re getting close to not paying (it) back”. His advice is that it is better for parents with any disposable income to spend the money helping them pay food and accommodation bills during university, and in saving for a deposit on a house. He was talking as hundreds of thousands of students start their university careers. Many face tuition bills of over £9,000 a year, but student loans are available to help pay those costs, and they are only repayable when graduates earn over a certain threshold. This clip was taken from 5 live Daily on Monday 19th September.
