Why did 'lawful' protest end in many deaths?

Newsday

Available for over a year

Political tension has been brewing for months in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the date of the next general elections, with opposition groups accusing President Joseph Kabila of hanging on to power. Violence has erupted at what Jean-Marc Kabunda of the UDPS (an opposition party) describes as a lawful and pre-arranged rally. He accuses the police of using live ammunition on the crowd. A witness for the news agency Reuters claims to have seen a crowd burning a police officer to death in an apparent act of revenge. Jean-Marc Kabunda gave his side of the story to Newsday.
