Where next for the SNP?

Westminster Hour

Available for over a year

This week the Scottish National Party will meet in Glasgow for its annual conference. What will the mood be? At the 2015 general election the SNP swept all before it taking 56 of the 59 Scottish seats at Westminster, and in May it returned to Government at Holyrood for the third time. But it hasn't all been plain sailing. Stewart Hosie had to resign as deputy leader and there have been police investigations into alleged financial impropriety by two former SNP MPs who now sit as independents. And now there's the challenge of Brexit and a potential second independence referendum. Westminster Hour reporter John Beesley travelled to Edinburgh to discuss the SNP with three seasoned observers of Scottish politics: Alex Massie of the Spectator, journalist Ruth Wishart and Professor James Mitchell. They met in the imposing surroundings of the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland which, for years, provided a temporary home to the newly devolved Scottish Parliament.
