Today marks 50 years since a colliery spoil tip collapsed onto the Welsh village of Aberfan, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and neighbouring houses. 116 children and 28 adults were killed in the disaster. An investigation after the tragedy found that the National Coal Board, who owned the waste tip, had ignored warnings about its condition. 5 live spoke to Jeff Edwards, who was eight-years-old when the disaster happened and was the last child to come out of the school alive. “There was a thunder sound, and the next thing I remember was waking up with all this material above me and a dead girl on my left-hand shoulder,” he told us. “One minute, I was a happy-go-lucky child and the next I had death on my shoulder – my childhood disappeared,” he added. This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on Friday 21 October 2016.
