Men who wear aftershave or deodorant seem more masculine to women – but only if they were not perceived to be very masculine in the first place, according to a study. Researchers from Newcastle University’s Centre for Behaviour and Evolution asked people to study volunteers with their natural body odour and then again with aftershave, before rating them on masculinity or femininity. The study found that when women were smelling natural body odours, the more masculine a man looked, the more masculine he smelled. When women smelt the aftershave or deodorant, the men who they had rated as masculine now smelled more masculine. Doctor Caroline Allen, who was involved in the study, said the findings suggest there is a “limit to our preferences for masculinity”. “Being very highly masculine is associated with being aggressive and uncooperative, so we don’t like high levels of masculinity in men’s fragrances,” she added.
