South Sudan mediator: "It's compromise or war"

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Thousands were injured or killed when conflict broke out in 2013, just two years after independence. Now, a peace agreement brokered by the regional body IGAD looks shaky, with former First Vice President Riek Machar calling for armed struggle against the government of President Salva Kiir. Before he was expelled by the Juba government earlier this year, Aly Verjee worked for the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission which was set up to implement the peace agreement. He speaks to Focus on Africa's Audrey Brown. (Photo: A South Sudanese SPLA soldier in Eastern Equatoria state, 2015. Credit: Getty.)
