A charity has told a committee of peers that more has to be done to protect vulnerable consumers targeted at night-time by online retailers and gambling and shopping programmes on television. The chief executive of the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, Polly Mackenzie, said that recent research found consumers with mental health problems reported night-time shopping as particularly damaging. She suggested some restrictions needed to be put in place to protect those people who find themselves repeatedly making purchases they later regret and cause significant financial self-harm.
