How treating inflammation could help depression

Discovery

Available for over a year

Treating inflammation in the body, such as when joints are inflamed by rheumatoid arthritis, has been shown to relieve symptoms of depression. Treating this inflammation has brought relief to those who have previously not responded to treatment. Professor Ed Bulmore from Cambridge University and Professor Carmine Pariante from Kings College London explain how this could revolutionise how we think about and treat depression. They are speaking to presenter James Gallagher. "It allows us to understand depression no longer as just a disorder of the mind and not even a disorder of the brain, but a disorder of the whole body. It shifts conceptually what we understand about depression." Professor Carmine Pariante Photo: Man walking against a brightening sky Credit: Thinkstock
