An appeal by a local authority in England for a name for its new gritting truck has resulted in several thousand responses including Gritter Garbo, True Grit and Gritty McGritface. Oldham Council's competition - which was supposed to be aimed at children - follows a previous appeal by the National Environment Research Council for the public to come up with a name of the UK's new polar research ship. Despite being the overwhelming favourite, Boaty McBoatface was deemed inappropriate. So will the same thing happen to the gritting truck?
