A national body representing the Hindu community is calling for a ban on the new £5 note after it emerged the plastic currency contained animal fat. The National Council of Hindu Temples says producing currency derived from acts of violence upon vulnerable non-aggressive creatures is not the behaviour of civilised beings. The note contains tallow, which is used in candles and soap and traditionally comes from beef or mutton.
