Thirty years after the first triple heart, lung and liver transplant took place at Papworth Hospital, a patient has been recalling how the operation changed his life. Andrew Armour was 23 when he was told his chances of survival were slim without the radical surgery. In 1997 surgeons performed the operation at the Cambridgeshire hospital. He became the seventh person to have the groundbreaking surgery. Only 10 people have had that same transplant surgery at the hospital since Davina Thompson became the first to receive three organs at the same time, in 1986. Now aged 42, Mr Armour, an associate professor of theoretical physics at Nottingham University said he was the only surviving recipient of the surgery. It transformed his life, he recalls, and 19 years later he feels "extremely well".
