The NHS 111 helpline is the service's non-emergency number and receives around 1.1 million calls every month. 5 live reporter Lucy Grey visited the 111 call centre in Hertfordshire to meet clinical advisor and former paramedic Mathew Westthorpe. There is around 20 staff at the centre that receive the calls that come in. Mathew says 鈥渋t can be up to 2,000-3,000 [calls] on a busy weekend or a bank holiday.鈥 On whether the centre can cope with the volume of calls, he says 鈥渢he NHS is about coping as best we can with the resources that are available.
