The City of Leicester today is very much the product of it's Victorian past, and yet all of those nineteenth century buildings are laid on top of the city's much much older past. Leicester is a truly ancient city, older even than London and frankly it doesn't hide it's past that well. Just scratch the modern day surface and it's all there to see. Take the building site next door to the High Cross shopping centre. Just a meter or so bellow the surface, archaeologists have found evidence of our Roman city. Ben Jackson couldn't resist popping over to the site to see it for himself.
