'Longest financial squeeze' causes NHS deficit

World at One

Available for over a year

NHS trusts in England are reporting deficits of nearly £900m in the nine months to the end of December. The chief executive of NHS Providers, Chris Hopson, told The World At One that financial problems were inevitable, despite trusts getting extra government funding, because being "in the middle of the longest financial squeeze in NHS history" it was "difficult to cope with the level of extra demand" on services.
