Radio 4 in Four

Available for over a year

Millions of homes now have smart energy meters fitted and by 2020 the government plans that we all will. The £11 billion cost is supposed to be more than balanced out by efficiency savings. But a study done in the Netherlands has found that some smart electricity meters are inaccurate, the worst over-recorded electricity use by 582%. In other words you use £100 of electricity and you’d be billed for £682! Paul Lewis talks to Professor Frank Leferink from the University of Twente, who conducted the study and Howard Porter, Chief Executive of Beama, the UK trade association for manufacturers of electro-technical equipment, including smart meters. First broadcast on Money Box, 12 March 2017.
